Indonesia eying digital early warning system

Indonesia may choose Japanese technology to anticipate the possibilities of natural disaster such as earthquakes and tsunamis hit.

The Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting-Terrestrial (ISDB-T) system would send the disaster warnings through designated organizations, even when the receiving devices were switched off.

If an earthquake or tsunami occurred, TV sets and portable TV receivers would be activated automatically and receive emergency news.

Communication and Information Minister Sofyan Djalil said Wednesday that it could be some time before Indonesia adopted all aspects of the digital technology.

“Maybe two to three years after the central government approves the use of a digital broadcast system,” Sofyan told reporters at a roadshow introducing the Japanese system.
