Bloggers report on Jakarta floods

JAKARTA UNDERWATER
Heavy rains from Wednesday evening through Friday afternoon have caused flooding in Jakarta, Indonesia.
We can follow the latest update on Jakarta floods by entering Indonesia’s blogosphere either monitoring some blog aggregators like Planet Terasi and Merdeka or tracking it in Technorati.
The country’s bloggers posted the latest pictures on their blog and their flickr accounts as well as writing “live report” from the “flood’s ground zero”. Citizen journalists on the way!
Seasonal rains cause flooding each year in Indonesia, including the capital, but Friday’s were the worst since 2002, when waters washed into the presidential palace and the lobby of a five-star hotel.
The floods inundated thousands of homes, government buildings and businesses Friday, forcing authorities to cut off electricity and water supplies. Some media said up to four people had been electrocuted, but officials were unable to confirm the reports.
According to the Jakarta Post, about 42,000 people had either fled their homes or been rescued by soldiers using dinghies.
However, the country’s meteorology department forecast more rains Saturday and over the next two weeks.
